The idea to start this project came from working on a camera obscura that will be used as an educational resource for all ages. I realised they are so simple and versatile – becoming a classroom, a darkroom, an artists studio and an attraction in its own right. Putting all this on wheels seems natural – sharing the simple beauty of the obscura with different people and places will be fantastic. The decision to travel by bike was simple – it lets us reach landscapes beyond the roads, is low-impact, cheap, and you’re really connected with your surroundings you never miss a thing. That ‘thing’ may well be some drizzle or a fly in your mouth, but it may also be a glimpse of a deer, a swooping buzzard, or a well earned rest at the peak of a hill. Beautiful. Hello! Like Sam, I rather like bicycles. Whilst I’m not a photographer, I love creative sustainable projects and this is one that’s got me pretty excited – when Sam asked me if I would join the Pinhole Pedallers my answer was a pretty speedy yes!

For me there seems no better way to spend summer than to swap London in rush hour for a sunny trundle around Devon with a giant camera in tow. I also cant wait to meet and greet lots of different people and encounter many of Devon’s beautiful landscapes along the way.

And now things are moving ahead… a map of Devon has arrived in the post, I’m starting to get my legs into Devon hill climbing shape, and next week I’m picking up the gazebo that will become the glorious camera obscura… Watch this space!
